Bengaluru

Cast off to Bengaluru

You may know Bengaluru better as Bangalore, the go-ahead, modern city at the heart of the vast expanse of the Deccan Plateau in southern India. What you probably don't know is that Bengaluru comes from two words meaning "boiled beans", which was the city's original name! Nowadays, Bengaluru is more often referred to as the "Garden City" due to its broad streets and public parks, and is the fifth largest city in India with a population of 6.8 million.

Type Cast

It is a city of many milestones: the first to get electricity in India, the city with the most places of worship of all faiths, and in more contemporary culture, it is the city with the highest number of pubs in India, and breweries in the world! From majestic monuments to malls, entertainment arcades to lush gardens with 200-year-old flora, game reserves and safari parks, pubs, restaurants and discotheques, Bengaluru offers something for everyone. The people are cosmopolitan and outgoing, and are equally at ease sitting in an Udupi-style restaurant, a clean but lower-end vegetarian eatery, snacking on idlis, (steamed dumplings of rice and lentils) washed down with glassfuls of coffee as they are in one of the city's many lounge bars, slinging back the margaritas and nibbling on tapas.

Fore Cast

Bengaluru's appealing climate is moderate throughout the year with summer temperatures in the low 30s° C (high 80s° F) and two rainy seasons every year from June to September and again at the end of the year. December and January come with a delightful nip in the air which does not demand more than a light jacket or a wrap, and these are perfect times for exploring the ancient monuments and hill stations in the countryside surrounding the city.

Up Cast

Expatriates have been coming to Bengaluru for years. The city is home to several heavy manufacturing industries, aerospace, call centres, medical research, business process outsourcing and much more, and is best known for its information technology industry giving it the status of the "Silicon Valley of India". The expatriate population guesstimate is approximately 12,000. Once settled, expatriates living in Bengaluru will find there are many enjoyable activities to dip in and out of: a thriving dance and film scene, clubs and societies to join, including the Overseas Womens' Group and the Bangalore Wine Club, a buzzing nightlife, and laid-back coffee bars and pubs where you can relax and meet friends. Bengaluru has hosted several international rock and pop acts over the last decade. Orient yourself from the landmark St. Patrick's Cathedral in the centre of town, and start exploring!

Broad Cast

Bengaluru has excellent international schools providing education from pre-school through to Grade 12. The International School Bangalore is regarded as one of the city's top schools, and follows the International Baccalaureate programme, whilst the Canadian International School is another popular choice, and follows two internationally-recognised curricula. The Indus International School and Mallya Aditi International School are also recognised as schools of high repute. As for healthcare, Bengaluru has excellent medical facilities. The healthcare groups Apollo Hospitals, Fortis and Columbia Asia are based in Bengaluru and cater to expat medical needs. Namaskara!
